About us

babymusic.com, active since 2006, is a division of London-based Cala Records Ltd, encouraging “A Sound Start in Life”. It is the nurturing and educational side of the company. We offer CDs and downloads for all your baby’s moods and needs, and provide a valuable online resource centre, “Music In Our Lives”. We work in association with the music foundation Arts Global, artsglobal.org, to further the appreciation of good music and for the advancement of music in education.

At babymusic.com we carry our own releases, including Baby Cello, Baby Harp, Baby Symphony, Peter and the Wolf and Mother Goose, along with carefully-selected, world-renowned third party recordings and series such as Baby IQ, Magic Maestro Music, The Mozart Effect, Romany Wood, The Snowman and Classical Kids.

"Music In Our Lives" provides information about the beneficial effects of listening to classical music during pregnancy, early childhood and generally, and how to find the best participatory music programmes for young people.

Founded by Geoffrey Simon in 1990, Cala Records is a respected boutique classical label. The company has offices in the UK and a subsidiary company in the USA. It has released over 100 recordings. It is typical of the classical recording industry as it stands today, where small, focused independent labels, producing high quality music and generating new ideas, are achieving increasing prominence in relation to the traditional “majors” in the market place. In this setting, babymusic.com is a natural project for Cala Records, where its musical expertise can be applied to the specific subject of what is best for young people in the world of music. Geoffrey Simon has conducted orchestras in England, the United States, Austria, Germany, Holland, Spain, Russia, Israel, Japan, China and his native Australia. He has been Music Director of the Albany Symphony Orchestra (New York), the Sacramento Symphony (California), the Orquesta Sinfónica de Baleares “Ciutat de Palma” (Majorca) and the Northwest Mahler Orchestra (Seattle). He has made over 45 recordings, for Cala Records and other labels, including the London Sound Series, which provides the music for Baby Cello, Baby Harp and future releases. Laura McDermott is our resident writer at “Music In Our Lives”. Laura studied Music and English at Keele University, followed by a Masters in Music Performance and Related Studies at Goldsmiths College, University of London. After several years of working in classical music publishing, Laura now works as a freelance writer and editor, alongside caring for her young son, Max.
